A Little Green Room is about more than adding space to your garden. It’s about creating somewhere that helps you think more clearly, work more comfortably and feel closer to nature every day.
That idea has a name: biophilic design.
Biophilic design is the principle of designing buildings and spaces that strengthen our connection with the natural world. Studies have shown that spending time around natural light, planting and natural materials can improve wellbeing, reduce stress and help us concentrate for longer.
While you don’t need to know the theory to enjoy the benefits, it’s something that naturally influences the way we design every Little Green Room.
What is biophilic design?
At its heart, biophilic design is about making it easier to experience nature in everyday life.
Rather than shutting ourselves away from the outdoors, it encourages us to work with it. That might mean filling a room with daylight, framing views of the garden, choosing natural materials or creating spaces where wildlife and planting can thrive.
For many people, stepping into the garden is enough to create a shift in mindset. Closing the door behind you, hearing birdsong instead of household noise, and looking out onto greenery instead of another wall can make work feel calmer and more focused.
How biophilic design influences our garden rooms
We don’t treat biophilic design as a checklist. Instead, it’s woven into the decisions we make throughout the design process.
Natural light
Large glazed doors fill every room with daylight, helping create a brighter, more uplifting place to spend your day. During your design consultation we’ll also help position your room to make the most of the available light while reducing glare where possible.
A stronger connection to your garden
One of the greatest benefits of working in a garden room is the view.
Whether it’s watching the seasons change, noticing wildlife passing through or simply enjoying a quieter outlook between tasks, being connected to your garden can make the working day feel very different.
Natural materials
Every Little Green Room is built using carefully selected materials that feel warm, honest and timeless.
Engineered oak flooring, birch plywood walls, cork and sustainably sourced timber all bring texture and character while avoiding the artificial feel of many modern workspaces.
Living roofs
Our sedum roofs do more than look beautiful.
They provide a habitat for insects and wildlife, help the building sit naturally within the garden and reinforce the feeling that your room belongs in its surroundings rather than simply being placed there.
A quiet place to focus
Nature isn’t only what you can see. It’s also how a space makes you feel.
Creating somewhere that’s separate from the distractions of the house gives you the privacy and headspace to concentrate, create or simply enjoy a moment of calm.
Why it matters
Most of us spend a large part of our lives indoors. Biophilic design reminds us that we feel better when our spaces maintain a connection to the natural world.
It’s one of the reasons so many of our customers tell us they feel more productive, more creative and generally happier once they’ve moved into their garden room.
The change isn’t just about having another room. It’s about stepping outside, taking a deep breath and finding a place where work feels more natural.
Garden rooms designed around nature
Every Little Green Room is designed to make the most of its surroundings.
From large glazed doors and living sedum roofs to sustainably sourced materials and carefully considered layouts, our rooms are built to feel like a natural extension of both your home and your garden.
The result is a workspace that doesn’t separate you from nature—it brings you closer to it.
